1. Introduction
1.1 About EcoStride Energy
EcoStride Energy is a Nigerian renewable energy company based in Abuja. For more than three years it has designed, supplied and installed solar and battery systems for businesses and households. Its technical team has completed more than 750 installations and has over 15 years of combined industry experience.
1.2 Purpose of the programme
To serve customers across Nigeria, EcoStride is establishing a network of independent, certified technicians known as Installation Partners. The Installation Partner Programme sets the standard these partners must meet and the means by which that standard is assessed and maintained.
Installation Partners represent EcoStride on every job. The quality, safety and conduct of their work therefore reflect directly on the company and its customers.
1.3 Who this guide is for
This guide is for technicians applying to become EcoStride Installation Partners. It assumes no prior knowledge of EcoStride. Applicants may be experienced electricians new to solar, or solar installers without formal training; the programme is designed for both.
Operational procedures, the partner code of conduct and contractual terms are not covered here. They are provided separately during onboarding.
2. Context: solar energy in Nigeria
Nigeria receives approximately 4 to 6.5 kWh of solar energy per square metre per day, with the highest levels in the north. Combined with unreliable grid supply and the rising cost of generator fuel, this makes solar and battery systems an increasingly important source of power for homes and businesses.
The market has also seen a large number of poorly designed and installed systems, and a significant volume of counterfeit or under-rated products. Many customers have been disappointed as a result. Competent, honest installation is essential to restoring confidence in the technology.
Several local conditions affect the design, installation and performance of every system. They are addressed in detail in the training modules.
Condition | Effect |
|---|---|
High temperatures | Reduced panel output; faster ageing of inverters and batteries |
Harmattan dust (approximately November to March) | Reduced panel output until panels are cleaned |
Heavy rain and frequent thunderstorms | Water ingress at poor seals and connections; lightning-induced surges |
Unstable grid supply | Voltage fluctuations that can damage unprotected equipment |
Widespread generator use | Risk of backfeed and equipment damage if generators are incorrectly connected |
3. Legal and standards framework
Electrical work in Nigeria is regulated. Installation Partners must comply with the legal requirements and standards that apply to each job, and with the manufacturer's instructions for the equipment installed.
Body or instrument | Relevance to Installation Partners |
|---|---|
Electricity Act 2023 | Principal legislation for the electricity sector, including renewable energy |
Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) | Regulates the electricity industry, including grid connection and mini-grids |
Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) | Enforces technical standards, inspects installations and certifies electrical installation personnel |
Nigerian Electricity Supply and Installation Standards (NESIS) Regulations 2015 | Minimum technical requirements for design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety |
Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) | Product standards and conformity assessment (SONCAP) for imported equipment |
Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 | Protection of customers' personal information, including photographs |
IEC 62548 and IEC 62446 | International standards for PV array design, and for testing, documentation, commissioning and maintenance |
EcoStride certification confirms that a partner meets EcoStride's standard. It does not replace any licence, registration or certification required by law.
4. The training programme
4.1 Objectives
The programme develops competence in five areas:
- Communication: dealing with customers and EcoStride clearly, respectfully and promptly.
- Integrity: honesty in all dealings, including when reporting mistakes or problems.
- Best practice: carrying out work to a recognised professional standard.
- Safety: protecting workers, customers and the public from harm.
- Technical competence: understanding how systems work, so that they can be designed, installed and maintained correctly.
4.2 Structure
The programme consists of five modules, requiring approximately 25 hours of study in total. Each module corresponds to one segment of the Part 1 assessment.
Module | Title | Units | Approximate study time |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Customer Management, Professional Conduct & Job Ownership | 12 | 4 hours |
2 | Safety, Protection & Technical Judgment | 13 | 5 hours |
3 | Electrical Fundamentals, Site Assessment & System Design | 13 | 6 hours |
4 | Installation, Configuration & Commissioning | 11 | 5 hours |
5 | Diagnostics, Troubleshooting & Maintenance | 11 | 5 hours |
Each module sets out learning outcomes, followed by short units, worked examples, case studies, practical activities, a knowledge check with answers and a glossary of key terms.
4.3 Guidance on study
- Study the modules in order. Module 2 (Safety) should be completed before the technical modules.
- Study in short sessions of one or two units.
- Work through every calculation independently.
- Complete each knowledge check before consulting the answers.
The assessment tests understanding rather than recall. Candidates who understand the reasoning in each unit will be able to apply it to unfamiliar situations.
5. Assessment and certification
Certification requires successful completion of two assessments.
Assessment | Format | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Part 1: Theory | 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes; 10 questions per module. A basic calculator is permitted and the necessary formulas are provided. Candidates work alone, without notes or other assistance. | Confirms knowledge and professional judgment across all five modules |
Part 2: Practical | Observed tasks using real equipment | Confirms safe working, workmanship, testing, fault-finding and customer handover |
Candidates who pass both assessments are admitted to the network as Probationary Partners.
6. The Partner Pathway
The Partner Pathway links each partner's performance to the work they are offered, their share of each job and their progression. Partners who consistently meet a high standard are offered more work and greater responsibility. Partners who do not meet the standard are offered less work and may be removed from the network.
6.1 Performance rating
Every completed job is rated. The rating combines five measures, with workmanship carrying the greatest weight because its effects persist long after the job is completed.
Measure | What it assesses |
|---|---|
Quality of workmanship | Conformity with required standards, verified from photographs and inspections |
Callbacks | Whether the work remains sound, or requires the customer to report a fault |
Customer rating | Communication, conduct and care of the customer's premises |
Reporting | Completeness, accuracy and timeliness of job reports and photographs |
Reliability | Punctuality and responsiveness |
6.2 Safety-critical conduct
Safety is not included in the rating average and cannot be offset by good performance elsewhere. The following are treated as serious breaches and are reviewed individually:
- working on equipment that has not been isolated and proved dead;
- commissioning or leaving a system without its protective earth;
- bypassing or disabling a protective device;
- unsafe work at height;
- reporting a job as complete when it is not.
6.3 Ranks
Rank | Description |
|---|---|
Probationary Partner | Has passed both assessments. Initial jobs are subject to closer review. |
Certified Partner | Has demonstrated consistent work to the EcoStride standard. Offered regular work. |
Senior Partner | Has an established record of high ratings and few callbacks. Given priority for jobs, including larger and commercial installations. |
Lead Technician | Leads crews on larger jobs and supports newer partners. |
Regional Installation Supervisor | An appointed role, selected from Lead Technicians on the basis of workmanship, leadership and integrity. Reviews the quality of partners' work and supports regional operations. |
A partner's share of each job increases with rank. The requirements for each rank are provided during onboarding.
6.4 Performance management
Where a partner's ratings fall below the required standard, the partner is offered fewer jobs and placed on a performance improvement period. If performance does not improve, the partner is suspended. Continued poor performance, or a serious safety breach, results in removal from the network.
6.5 Fairness
The pathway operates on the following principles:
- new partners are offered sufficient work to establish a record;
- ratings are based on recent jobs, so that improvement is reflected;
- partners can see their own rating and how it is made up;
- partners may request a review of a rating they consider incorrect;
- ratings must be earned; pressuring a customer for a favourable rating is misconduct.
